Smashbox Photo-Finish Primer Oil // First Impressions

IMG_8643

Oil? For your face? Exactly what I thought a few months ago. Oils are great for dry skin as well as oily skin, let me explain…

I had an amazing facial a few months ago, my first ever. The therapist was impressed by how I’ve taken care of my skin but she did say I could do with a little more oil, and to maybe check out some of the facial oils in stores. When I first heard about oils, I thought it was just going to be another ‘fad’ but more & more people were swearing by them so I thought next time I see one I’ll try it. My dry skin could always do with a little extra moisture!

Recently I started using soothing oils before bed and even though the texture takes a little while to get used to I was pretty impressed with how the oils left my skin feeling softer the next day. Oils are great for dry skin for a lasting moisturizing effect (I don’t know about you but my skin just seems to absorb regular moisturizing creams so quickly, and sometimes don’t feel rich enough) and they can be great for oily skin to to help balance the skin out (it will reduce the amount of oil your body produces when you keep trying to remove it).

When Smashbox sent over the new Photo Finish Primer Oil to prime the face for makeup, I was super intrigued as I’ve never heard of a primer oil for makeup before. I never tried any of my previous oils under makeup as they obviously felt quite greasy so I decided to document my first day using the Primer Oil to see how it faired.

Coming in the same size bottle & dropper format as the Camera Ready BB Water foundation, which you guys know I enjoy (blogpost here). You get a LOT of product in this. It has over 15 different essentials oils (including de-stressing lavender & chamomile) It describes leaving the skin radiant & lustrous with a skincare promise of improved moisture within 4 weeks of day & night use. I liked this as you’re not only getting a primer but a perfectly good night oil too (which you can also use on the ends of your hair!).

It’s been a while since I used a primer but I’ve been thinking about getting one for ages as I feel that barrier between makeup & skin really helps to keep skin clear. The oil feels well – oily as you can imagine but I applied it to the skin in soft circular motions. The skin starts to absorb a lot of the oil until your left with a sheer veil of the softening oil. You can feel it starts to break down & become a little more like a dry-oil for a more makeup-friendly base. You can see below the natural sheen it leaves on the skin, which I think definitely shows through the makeup in the last image (unretouched of course). Glowy & hydrated but not greasy in finish!Smashbox-Primer-Oil-review tar-mar-smahbox-primer-oilThe next test was to see if it made my makeup last the whole day. My skin tends to get dryer as the day goes on, especially when I’m outside so I’m glad to report my skin stayed supple for the rest of the day! My makeup did stay on better where it sometimes fades (chin, lower cheeks) but with the highly moisturizing properties, it’s best not to touch your face throughout the day to avoid rubbing makeup off.

Really interesting concept for a product & I think Smashbox did an awesome job executing it! Definitely worth a try for oil-loving girls battling winter flakiness…

Super intrigued and it looks great on you! I’m not a fan of oil based products because personally for me they tend to make me breakout! But, that being said, the positivity of the product is making me want to give it a go…hmmm…

Its definitely different but dry oil-type oils break down really quickly kinda like the nuxe body oil!
